Would you believe the dog ate the subtitles?
Fortunately that is definitely not the case, as barring some horrendous mistake of monumental proportions, every file uploaded to animePLUS! has subtitles, whether they be soft or hard. In the event a file is an MKV or MP4 file, you may have to turn the subtitles on manually for them to appear. If the file is an AVI file, then we may have made an unfortunate mistake, in which case you can open a support ticket and have any bandwidth that was deducted from your account re-instated, and we will replace the file with a proper version.

Using Media Player Classic
Media Player Classic is a very different program from Windows Media Player, for one, it will actually work when you try to view something with it. Media Player Classic is our preferred method to view soft subtitles, as you don't have to go through the trouble of manually turning them on, the program should do that for you. Media Player Classic can be obtained via free direct download as part of the Combined Community Codec Pack.

Using VLC Media Player
If for some reason you haven't chosen to view the file with Media Player Classic, you can still view it with VLC Media Player. Please note that you will have to manually turn the subtitle on, or load the ASS subtitle file manually, and VLC is known to lag with soft subtitles, and will sometimes crash if you try to skip forward. If that doesn't have you worried, you can download VLC for free right here. You must turn on the subtitles manually, once you open the file in VLC, by going to "Video" > "Subtitles Track" > and selecting whichever track shows up, usually "Track 1". If the file you downloaded came with an ASS subtitle file, you can load it manually by going to "File" > "Open File" > Select the "Use a subtitles file" box, and finding the ASS subtitle file where you have saved it on your computer.

With that Said...
Once in awhile you will come across a file who you would think has the sole purpose to agrivate you and make you pull your hair out. These files will not work in Media Player Classic, but will work in VLC Media Player, or the other way around. So, be sure to try the file in both players to save yourself a headache and the cost of a decent wig.
